As an Oregonian, ice rinks were few and far between growing up. From Sherwood to Eugene, this is no rink in site. Sports like hockey, figure skating, speed skating, and curling are not as well-known or popular. So lets change that!
Until recently I used to say I skated fewer times then pumping my own gas. Admittedly I am no skating professional but I am a father and someone interested in a fun activity to do with my family. Plus the demand is there.
Believe it or not, there is a Junior Hockey league with teams throughout Oregon, routinely driving past our wonderful City of Albany. The Mid-Willamette Valley market would be more than enough to support a modest ice rink with room to grow. The possibilities of hosting tournaments will bring tourism to our hotels and restaurants. An organized sport and extracurricular activity is something parents are always on the hunt for.
Plans have been developed and a builder is in place to construct the facility at a reduced cost, knowing that this for the community. The hurdles now are an attractive piece of land and enough funds to secure the cost of construction.
